Primary school costs and the help available (2026/27)
Free schoolbooks, the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance, voluntary contributions, school transport and hot school meals.
Updated 5 October 2026
Schoolbooks are free
Since September 2023, the Primary Schoolbooks Scheme covers schoolbooks, ebooks, workbooks and copybooks in every recognised primary and special school. Schools get the funding directly, so there's nothing to apply for. Books are on loan, and schools can't ask for a deposit. Extras like swimming, tours or insurance aren't covered.
Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance
In 2026 the allowance is €160 for children aged 2 to 11 and €285 for ages 12 to 22. It's for families getting certain social welfare or training payments who are under an income limit. Most families are paid automatically. The 2026 application window has closed; rates and dates are set each year, so check gov.ie for next year.
Voluntary contributions are voluntary
Many schools ask for a voluntary contribution. It isn't compulsory, and your child's place can't depend on it. Schools can charge the actual cost of optional extras, such as school tours.
School transport
Children are generally eligible for the primary school transport scheme if they live 3.2 km or more from their nearest suitable school. The annual charge for 2026/27 is €100 per child, with a cap per family. Children with a medical card travel free. Apply through Bus Éireann; the main deadline is in spring.
Hot school meals
Since September 2025, every primary school can apply to provide hot school meals at no cost to families. Schools choose whether to take part, so ask your school. The scheme is being revised in 2026 to cut food waste and offer more choice.
